What is Interim Management?
The Chartered Management Institute has defined an interim manager as "one who is employed on a short-term basis to achieve a specific objective. Interim Managers share in confidential decision-making and take on line-management responsibilities in order to get ‘the job done’.”Typically interims are employed for three to nine months during periods of change, particularly covering for a slow recruitment gap, in project leadership and implementing change management objectives. There are however no limits to the scope for application of Interim managers across a business, with real value added.
What are the key benefits of an Interim?
- Experience – in 9 out of 10 cases the interim has experience at least one level higher than his/her interim position
- Speed – Available in days with minimal recruitment and termination cost or hassle. Used to hitting the ground running
- Objective – External from company politics or protocol, a fresh take on projects, issues and conflict
- Results Oriented – Used to being judged on performance and outputs, ambitious targets and goals are natural and welcomed
- Knowledge Transfer – Retained skills, contacts and experience for your full time workforce
- Delivery – Interims are more ‘hands on’ than consultants – happy to role up their sleeves and implement change
- Flexible – experience enables a ‘tackle anything’ mentality
- Cost effectiveness
